I’m James David West, actor turned professional photographer.

What happens behind the eyes is the most interesting

I focus on the subtle moments of revelation—the quiet confidence in your eyes, the warmth in your genuine smile, the thoughtful pause that shows your contemplative nature. Each session is a collaborative journey where lighting, composition, and conversation work together to unveil the person behind the professional.
My portraits capture not just how you look, but who you are—creating images that resonate with authenticity and make meaningful connections.

I was born and raised in Nashville, TN, so I am what we call a "Nashville Native", otherwise most people are transplants.

Storytelling has always been part of my persona, even at an early age. I used to "perform" for my imaginary audience in the walls...that is until the The Truman Show came out...

Just like with my photography, I enjoy the simpler things in life - being out and about with friends, good food, and nice views. I'm also a sucker for telling a story that I've already told a hundred times...

I'm an actor as well as a photographer, and you can look me up on IMDb!

About me

James David West

My Photographic Journey

My journey into photography began with an innate eye for composition that I carried since childhood, though it wasn't until the quiet moments of the pandemic that I truly embraced this calling. What started as a practical investment to enhance my acting auditions quickly blossomed into a profound passion that has become the foundation of JDW Photography.

Artistic Approach

As a headshot specialist with a developing focus in event photography, I create images that are detailed, intimate, dynamic, and what I like to call "creamy." My work is distinguished by a deliberate technical approach—shooting at deeper depths of field (around f8.0) to maintain natural focus across facial features while still achieving that eye-catching sharpness that draws viewers in.

The Actor's Advantage

My background as a professional actor gives me a unique advantage in the studio. With the "Gift of Gab" and years of experience connecting with diverse personalities, I guide clients to reveal what's happening behind their eyes—because that's where true character emerges. I believe in capturing the best version of people while ensuring they still look authentically like themselves.

Creative Vision

Though JDW Photography launched in early 2025, I'm rapidly developing my craft through self-education and study of master photographers like Karl Taylor. My approach combines technical precision with genuine human connection, creating a comfortable environment where clients can express their authentic selves.

The Perfect Moment

My favorite part of any session is when everything aligns—the lighting setup, the client's expression, the perfect focus—and I capture exactly what I envisioned. Those moments are happening more frequently now, which tells me I'm on the right path. There's nothing quite like that split second when I know we've captured something special.

Beyond the Camera

When I'm not behind the camera, you'll find me pursuing my acting career of 8+ years—because for me, these aren't hobbies, they're lifestyles that feed into each other. My theatrical background informs my photography, helping me direct and connect with clients in ways that bring out their best. And yes, if you hear spontaneous noises during your session, that's just my enthusiasm when I see that perfect shot emerging. It's all part of keeping the experience lively and building your confidence in real-time.

The JDW Experience

At JDW Photography, I believe a great headshot session should be both professional and enjoyable. My clients appreciate not just the final images, but also the experience itself—a relaxed, creative environment where they discover new facets of themselves through the lens. Every session is an opportunity to create something authentic and impactful that will serve you for years to come.
