Preparation Guide

Thank you for booking your session! I'm excited to work with you to create images that truly capture your essence. This guide covers everything you need to know to prepare for our time together.

Session Logistics

  • Arrival Time: Please arrive 15 minutes early to allow for a relaxed start
  • Restroom Reminder: There is no public restroom available, so please use the bathroom before arriving (emergencies excluded)
  • Studio Access: The photography space includes a private changing area equipped with hooks, a mirror, and basic amenities
  • Privacy Protocol: I will step out of the building during outfit changes to ensure your complete privacy
  • Support Person: You're welcome to bring a friend or family member to accompany you during the session
  • Energy Boost: Consider bringing water and a small snack to stay energized if needed

General Preparation

Hair Preparation

  • Schedule a haircut at least one week before the shoot to allow it to settle naturally
  • Avoid overloading on shiny hair products as they can create unwanted glare
  • Check for and style any flyaways or baby hairs around the hairline
  • Consider having someone check the back of your neck/hairline before arriving

Makeup and Grooming

  • Arrive with makeup done, including a natural look for headshots
  • Bring powder for touch-ups, especially for shine control—this applies to everyone!
  • Use lip balm to keep lips moisturized and prevent dryness
  • For best skin results:
  • Stay hydrated in the days leading up to the shoot
  • Exfoliate and moisturize your skin the night before
  • Avoid heavy skincare treatments or sun exposure right before
  • Avoid foods that cause bloating or excessive salt intake the day before

Detailed Personal Grooming

Check and groom these commonly overlooked areas:

  • Eyebrows, including between brows (unibrow area)
  • Nose and ear hair
  • Neckline hair and stubble
  • Sideburns (ensure even length)
  • Facial hair edges (clean and defined)
  • Back of neck hairline
  • Shoulders/collar area for dandruff or stray hairs

For clean-shaven looks, consider a fresh shave just before the session. Ensure nails are clean and neatly trimmed, as hands may be visible in some shots.

Outfit Preparation

Clothing Care

  • Lint roll all outfits to remove dust, pet hair, and stray threads
  • Steam or press all clothing to avoid wrinkles
  • Bring several outfit options that complement your eyes, style, and body type

Style Guidelines

  • Avoid patterns that are too bold or busy, as they can distract from your face
  • Solid colors often work best
  • Keep accessories minimal unless they're part of your personal branding
  • Ensure jewelry is subtle and not overly reflective
  • Even if focusing on upper body, bring clean shoes just in case full-body shots are taken

Additional Items to Bring

  • Touch-up Kit: Comb/brush, hairspray, blotting paper, tissues, powder for shine control
  • Eyewear: If you wear glasses, clean them thoroughly; consider bringing frames without lenses if glare is a concern
  • Props or Branding Items: If this is a personal branding session, bring items that reflect your work or personality

The Vision

The goal is to capture a personal connection on camera, one that will truly draw in the attention of the viewer. Focus less on what to wear and more on what will help you get into certain mindsets you'd like to capture. Think about the emotions or thoughts you want to convey.

Mindset Preparation

  • Consider how you want to present yourself and ensure your choices reflect that
  • Practice smiling, neutral, and expressive looks in the mirror before your session
  • Do light stretches or facial exercises before the session to avoid stiffness
  • Loosen up your jaw, shoulders, and neck to reduce tension
  • Mentally prepare for the session to take the full time, as patience helps maintain a relaxed look

Your comfort and privacy are my top priorities. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or specific requirements you may have before our session.

Looking forward to creating something special together!

Perfect Lighting for Your Face Shape

Discover how professional lighting science creates your most flattering portraits

The Science Behind Great Portraits

Your face shape is key to creating stunning portraits. Professional photographers use this crucial factor to determine the most flattering lighting patterns for each client.

Just as no two people are alike, the way light interacts with different face shapes varies dramatically. What looks flattering on one person might be unflattering on another.

With this interactive guide, you can identify your face shape, see which lighting patterns will be most flattering for you, understand why certain lighting works better for your features, and preview how different lighting affects your face shape.

This is the same approach I use with every client to ensure they look their absolute best in their portraits.

Why Our Portraits Are 8x10

The JDW Photography Difference

At JDW Photography, I make a deliberate artistic choice to deliver all portraits in the classic 8x10 ratio. While many modern photographers deliver images in their camera's native 3:2 ratio, I believe the 8x10 format offers superior composition for professional headshots and portraits. This thoughtful approach represents one of the distinguishing elements of my artistic vision.

Industry Standard Excellence

The 8x10 ratio has been the industry standard for professional headshots in acting, modeling, and corporate environments for decades. By delivering your images already properly formatted to this ratio, I ensure your portraits are:

  • Ready for immediate use in industry submissions
  • Perfectly proportioned for standard printing sizes
  • Optimized for both digital and physical portfolios
  • Professionally presented without needing additional cropping

Precision Composition

When I frame your portrait in an 8x10 ratio, I'm making careful artistic decisions about:

  • The perfect balance of headroom and negative space
  • Ideal subject placement within the frame
  • Deliberate compositional choices that highlight your features
  • Professional presentation that stands out from amateur photography
  • Rather than leaving these critical decisions to chance or forcing you to crop later, each portrait is thoughtfully composed to present you at your absolute best.

Named Border Editions

For clients needing letter-sized prints (8.5x11), I offer special Named Border Editions. These maintain the perfect 8x10 composition while adding your name at the bottom of an 8.5x11 canvas—combining ideal framing with standard printing dimensions.

Social Media Ready

Despite what some might assume, the 8x10 ratio is actually ideal for social media platforms:

Provides sufficient content for platform-specific cropping

  • Works well when automatically converted to circular profile pictures
  • Ensures your face remains properly framed regardless of display format
  • Eliminates the need for you to make difficult cropping decisions

My Artistic Commitment

Occasionally clients ask why my portraits appear "more square" than some other photographers' work. This is precisely because I've already optimized the framing rather than leaving it in the camera's native ratio.

This deliberate choice reflects my professional standards and artistic vision. When you choose JDW Photography, you're not just getting photographs—you're getting carefully crafted portraits where every element, including the composition ratio, has been thoughtfully considered to present you at your very best.
