The Artist
James David West is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work spans acting, producing, photography, and voiceover—all unified by a singular vision: revealing the authentic emotional landscape that exists beneath the surface of who we are.
The Journey
My path to the arts began in music. I spent years as guitarist and vocalist, managing bands, and producing vocals for two indie albums. But it was the discovery of acting at the age of 30 that changed everything. What started in community theatre quickly revealed a natural ability to portray believable characters—particularly those navigating the darker, more complex territories of the human experience.
Between music and acting, life provided an unconventional education: a decade of service work. Waiting tables, manning call centers, working retail, driving delivery routes, stacking warehouse shelves. These weren't just bill-paying gigs—they were a masterclass in human psychology. Learning to connect with different personality types, reading intention behind words, recognizing what people actually need versus what they say they want. These skills became the foundation of everything that followed.
The Craft
As an Actor, I specialize in dark, emotionally charged characters. My ten feature film credits include leads in "Legend of Lake Hollow" and "God Country," plus a standout performance in "Tether." Awards include Best Supporting Actor at the '18 Nashville 48HR Film Festival and Best Male Lead Actor for Don Baker in "Butterflies Are Free." While I'm naturally drawn to troubled, complex characters navigating precarious situations, I also enjoy comedy and like to think I'm pretty funny—though others may disagree, and that's their loss.
As a Producer, I'm driven by having a particular view of the world—one I want to see expressed through film. Several passion projects are in development, each exploring those internal landscapes that fascinate me most. They may see the light of day. Or they may remain beautifully unfinished in perpetuity. Both outcomes have their charm.
As a Voiceover Artist, I work across narration, audiobooks, character work, audio dramas, and podcasts—always seeking that authentic emotional connection that makes listeners feel something real rather than merely hear words.
As a Photographer, I focus on subtle moments of revelation: the quiet confidence in your eyes, the warmth in your genuine smile, the thoughtful pause that shows your contemplative nature. Each session is a collaborative journey where lighting, composition, and conversation work together to unveil the person behind the professional. My portraits capture not just how you look, but who you are—creating images that resonate with authenticity and forge meaningful connections.
The Philosophy
A common thread runs through all my work: the freedom these mediums give me to express how I see and feel the world without restraint. There's power in that kind of authenticity—especially when you can guide others to that same place of genuine expression.
I look for intention in faces, not vacancy. We all hide our true thoughts and feelings—it's basic human survival—which is precisely why my years in service work and acting became so valuable. Learning to read past the surface, to understand the psychology of different personality types, gave me access to what people are actually feeling beneath their protective masks. Now I use that insight to help scene partners, photography clients, and collaborators find their way back to authentic expression.
This work has sharpened my attention to detail and, surprisingly, made me more approachable. My acting background gives me insight into directing others toward genuine moments rather than manufactured poses. It's essentially therapy, but with significantly better lighting.
The Nashville Advantage
Being based in Nashville—the music capital of the world and a major entertainment hub—provides the perfect ecosystem for a multi-disciplinary artist. The city's creative infrastructure supports everything from intimate character work to large-scale productions. The collaborative spirit of the music industry extends naturally into film, theatre, and commercial work.
Currently
I'm most excited about the photography journey I'm on, watching it develop alongside my continuing acting career. Several passion projects are in various stages of development, each exploring the emotional territories that drive my work across all mediums.
I'm actively seeking representation for acting and producing opportunities—always looking for projects that allow for the kind of authentic, emotionally complex storytelling that drew me to this work in the first place.
The Vision
Whether stepping into a character's troubled psyche, guiding a client to their most authentic self through the camera lens, producing a story that needs telling, or lending my voice to bring someone else's words to life, the goal remains constant: create moments of genuine human connection that resonate long after the scene ends, the session concludes, or the final frame fades.
This is what drives me as an artist—not just the craft itself, but the opportunity to help others feel something real, something true, something that might otherwise remain hidden beneath the surface.
After all, we're all performing most of the time anyway. The art is in making that performance honest.
